Asphalt Crack & Pothole Patching

Asphalt is made up of aggregates (crushed stone) and binders (glues) that keep the mixture together. Asphalt is a deep, rich black hue when it is freshly paved. UV rays from the sun will eventually break down those binding components, allowing moisture to soak in and fill in the spaces left behind as time passes.

As a result of the moisture, the aggregates expand and contract, weakening the pavement's stability over time. The color of the asphalt changes from deep black to a pale, ashy grey that we see more frequently out in the world as a result of this entire process. If this process is allowed to continue, the binding materials will deteriorate to the point where they will lose all bond with the aggregates. This is when potholes and cracks start to appear. And that's something we don't want!

Greater Milwaukee Asphalt Paving offers a variety of asphalt patching services to help you get the most out of your investment.

Asphalt Repair Methods

  • Throw-and-Roll - This is a temporary repairing procedure in which a hole is filled with liquid asphalt and then rolled over. When liquid asphalt reacts with air, it freezes and can be applied in layers. In circumstances where a quick or emergency fix is required, this is an excellent option.
  • Spray Injection - The initial stage in spray injections is to blow water and debris out of the crack or pothole using special truck-mounted equipment. Second, aggregate and emulsion are poured into it at extremely high pressures, eliminating the need for compaction. This method is good for inclement weather and is frequently chosen over the throw-and-roll method, which is only temporary.
  • Semi-Permanent Patch - First, the surface is adequately prepared by removing water and dirt with a broom or an air compressor. The repairing area is then trimmed down using a hand tool or power equipment. The patching mix is then poured into the prepared hole and compacted using a roller.
  • Full-Depth Patch - A full-depth patch is regarded as a long-term fix. To offer a firmer foundation, the patching area is excavated to a depth of 4 inches or more and extended at least one foot into the surrounding region. The asphalt mix is then applied, followed by a tack coat mix. Finally, a backfill is poured to guarantee that the aggregate is properly bonded.

Asphalt Repair FAQs.

  • How do I avoid asphalt deterioration?

Although you can't totally prevent your asphalt from deteriorating, there are several things you can do to help it last as long as possible. Surface water is one of the most prevalent causes of asphalt failure, and as we've already discussed, water drainage systems are a concern in our area, so efficient water management and drainage is the first line of defense. Regular sealcoating coatings can also help protect your asphalt from harmful UV rays, as well as automotive chemicals and fluids, which can damage down your asphalt over time.

  • How often should I repair my asphalt?

As a general guideline, you should evaluate your asphalt for damage at least once a year, however we recommend doing it annually. During this inspection, keep an eye out for little and major cracks, as well as the start of any holes. If you notice something that doesn't appear to be quite right, the best thing you can do is address it as quickly as possible. Whether you're not sure, you can always contact us and we'll let you know if any repairs are required or if you can get away with it for a little longer.

  • Are cracks in my asphalt really that serious?

Little monsters rarely stay that way as they grow older. They grow in size! Asphalt cracks aren't an exception. They're tiny monsters with the potential to grow into giants. They tend to grow longer and deeper if neglected. When a car drives over it, the pressure from the vehicle causes the crack to widen somewhat. This will allow one of asphalt's worst enemies (water) to undermine the foundation, causing more serious issues. So, the quick answer to this issue is yes, asphalt cracks are quite dangerous.

  • I have lots of cracks in my asphalt. Should I just replace it?

That's something we'll do everything we can to avoid. We understand how difficult it can be to determine if your driveway should be repaired or redone entirely. However, there are a few things to think about:

Your asphalt's age is the first thing to consider.

    2. The amount of fissures in the surface.

    3. The number of potholes in the road, and so forth.

If a large number of major repairs are required, replacing the entire structure may be a more cost-effective option than repairing each issue individually. If you're concerned, we'll gladly do an inspection to determine which of these measures is required.

Putting off Asphalt Repairs Can Be Costly

Small problems in life have a tendency to snowball into much bigger ones. Asphalt issues are no exception. If you delay to remedy cracks and potholes in your asphalt, they will cause more problems. They will not only degrade the appearance of your asphalt, but they will also constitute a safety risk to drivers and pedestrians, and water erosion can result in full asphalt breakdown. Let's just say that if your asphalt fails and you need to totally resurface it, the cost of asphalt repair pales in comparison. When you select Greater Milwaukee Asphalt Paving to do a repair project, you're making a wise investment that will pay off in the long run.
